Love the Lord your God
with all your heart
and with all your mind and with all your strength
A chemistry and science teacher at A.R. Johnson Junior High School, Mrs. Rosa Tarver Beard, established the Debutante Club in the spring of 1963 to mentor African American girls in Augusta, Georgia. It was renamed The Rosa T. Beard Debutante Club in Mrs. Beard’s honor (1990-1991).
For nearly five decades, Mrs. Beard dedicated her life to grooming thousands of young women.
Also, we honor the Debutante Club’s six founding members: Mattie Burney, Roberta Harrison Bush, Valorie Tillman Davis, Margaret Butler Johnson, Jeanette Roberts Spencer, and Patricia Becton Wilker.
